Bunny Checklist

If you're thinking about a new rabbit, you might be asking yourself: what should I buy them? Making sure you have the proper supplies for your bunny is absolutely crucial. There is definitely a lot of conflicting information on the web about what rabbits really do need, what is optional, what to avoid, etc. All of the info you will find on this checklist is based off of years of rabbit experience on our end, including some trial and error, as well as speaking with other experienced rabbit breeders and pet owners from all over. Click the buttons under a product to buy that item online!
Please note - we are not veterinarians, and again this info is based off of personal experience and research.
Pelleted Food - Listed below are the pelleted food brands we recommend!
Picture
Oxbow Garden Select
These pellets are a good option, and are much better than the Oxbow essentials pellets. However these are still on the brown side, and we prefer the other pellet brands.
~ Can be found at some local pet/farm stores, and on amazon.com and chewy.com
Click here to shop Oxbow Garden select on chewy.com

Haystack Naturals Pellets
Haystack pellets are locally milled in Oregon and are free of corn & soy. Our bunnies love them! They are found at select local farm stores in Oregon.
Picture
Sherwood Pellets
Sherwood Pet Health definitely produces the most high quality pellets out there. They are super green and fresh smelling, and the ingredients are amazing. It is soy, corn, and gluten/grain free. It is by far the most expensive of this list of pellets (and so thats why we cannot feed it) but I'd say it's worth it.

After you've chosen a pellet brand, you can put a "check" on that!

Hay - listed below are the hay brands we recommend. Remember, hay is CRUCIAL!
Picture
Small Pet Select Assorted Hay
This brand provides high quality hay that is shipped to your door. It is very green and fresh! They sell Orchard grass, Timothy, Oat, and Alfalfa hay. Small Pet Select is definitely spendier than Oxbow or a bale of hay.

Oxbow Assorted Hay
Oxbow provides quality hay for an affordable price. If you order online, it can be shipped to your door (and for free is you have Amazon Prime)! It is very green, fresh, and fragrant. They have Timothy, Orchard Grass, Oat, Alfalfa, Botanical, and Meadow grass hay, as well as hay mixtures to keep thing fun for your bun! (Rhyme intended). ;) They also have organic hays.

Hay Bales
Hay bales are easily the most affordable option. These usually come from local farmers and therefor are nice and fresh! Most local farm/feed stores carry these. You can also look on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace to see if any local farmers are selling bales. ALWAYS make sure you get Orchard Grass, Oat, or Timothy hay (recommended) as a lot of the time bales are mixed with other types of hay that may not be good for your bun.
Remember - alfalfa hay is very high in calories/sugar and should only be fed to bunnies under 5-6 months, if at all.
After you've chosen a hay brand, you can put a "check" on that!

Treats - listed below are the treat brands we recommend.
Picture
Oxbow Assorted Treats
Oxbow has an absolutely amazing line of treats. They have freeze dried fruit treats as well as baked treats. They come in Cranberry, Apple, Banana, Carrot, Hay flavored, and more!

Wire Playpen #1 by Frisco
This pen is a perfect area for your buns! It provides plenty of room for one or two bunnies, and has a door on it. It can be found exclusively on chewy.com (the reason we choose the Frisco pen vs. others, is because Frisco has the best price and great quality in our experience). Wire C&C Grid Cage by Langria
C&C grids are by far one of my favorite options as far as housing goes. They are not only very affordable, but can be used to create many different unique housing options! 42 inch Double Door Dog Crate by Frisco
We have personally used dog crates for years. Although they are very functional, we are having to switch, because the babies can fit out of the bar spacing when they are little! However, crates feature solid flooring, that is easy to clean and not slippery - plus, the pan slides out! They are also made from coated metal, and no wood, so hosing them down/cleaning is made easy! Frisco is our tried and true brand you can find on chewy.com, and you get free shipping! It's about $50 for the 42 inch.

Water Bottle
Picture
Lixit Wide Mouth Water Bottle - BPA Free (16 oz)
After lots of trial and error with water bottles, we have decided this is our favorite, easy to drink from, dishwasher safe water bottle. It is "wide mouth" - meaning the ball at the end is larger and water flows through easier, so buns can stay hydrated. It comes with a wire ring that easily and securely hooks onto the cage. Free Amazon Prime shipping. IMPORTANT - In the lid there will be a blue ring. Be careful not to lose this!! It is what keeps the bottle from leaking.

Although these are meant for home use, they make amazing hay racks! The holes are smaller so the hay doesn't get everywhere, but are still big enough where they can get plenty of hay. Definitely get the large size! These are $9.99 on Amazon Prime.

Litter boxes
Picture
Dollar Tree Litter boxes (Greenbrier Kennel Club brand)
These are the litter boxes we use, and they can be found at Dollar tree. You can order online on their site but unfortunately have to buy at least 24 in order to do so. They work great and are easy to wipe out after dumping old litter. And if they break, (they are a little flimsy) you can get another for $1!
Picture
Amazon Basics Litter Pan

KW Cages Stainless Steel Grated Litter Pan (Medium)
This litter pan is absolutely amazing. The stainless steel doesn't stain from pee like plastic does, and the litter mostly slides out really easily! It also has a grate so they aren't sitting in their dirty litter. Linked is the medium size - its best for Holland Lops. For smaller buns (under 3 lbs) the small is good. And for those buns over 6 lbs, the large!

Compressed Equine Wood Pellet Bedding
We buy these at our local farm store, and our favorite and recommended brands are Dry Den and the Tractor Supply Wood Pellets. These pellets are very absorbent and trap odors very well. We use these for all of our rabbits. Look for a Wilco, Costal, or Tractor Supply farm store near you. We pay about $6.50 per 40 lb bag.
